The Federal Government has welcomed Nigeria’s reclassification by global index provider FTSE Russell from “Unclassified” to Frontier Market status, describing the development as a major validation of ongoing economic and capital market reforms.

The reclassification will take effect from the opening of trading on Monday, September 21, 2026, marking Nigeria’s return to the global Frontier Market universe nearly three years after it was removed in September 2023.

Nigeria’s exclusion at the time was largely linked to challenges surrounding foreign exchange availability, capital repatriation and the execution of FX transactions, which affected the accessibility of the Nigerian market to international investors.

According to a statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, the latest decision followed sustained improvements in foreign exchange liquidity, capital repatriation and market accessibility.

According to the Ministry, the development reflects the cumulative impact of the Federal Government’s macroeconomic and structural reform programme and sends a positive signal to international investors about Nigeria’s investment environment.

The Ministry said the reclassification represents an important milestone in the country’s efforts to rebuild investor confidence and develop a deeper, more liquid and globally competitive capital market.

“It is a meaningful signal to global capital that our market is open, orderly and improving,” the Ministry said.

However, it stressed that the reclassification should be viewed as a milestone rather than the final destination, noting that the government’s broader ambition is to position Nigeria for Emerging Market status in the near term.

The Ministry commended the Securities and Exchange Commission, Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigerian Exchange Group, Central Securities Clearing System, capital market operators and other stakeholders for their contributions to the development.

It said their coordinated efforts in regulatory reforms, modernisation of market infrastructure and engagement with investors had played a critical role in restoring Nigeria’s standing among international index providers.

Looking ahead, the Federal Government pledged to continue working with regulators and market institutions to deepen market liquidity, expand investor participation and strengthen investor protection.

It added that policies aimed at improving the depth, transparency and global competitiveness of the Nigerian capital market would remain central to the country’s economic transformation agenda.
