The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the arrest of Kuje Area Council Chairman, Mr Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, over his reported threat to residents to vote the All Progressives Congress (APC) or leave the council area.

ADC in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said Sections 40, 41 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution guarantee every Nigerian the right to belong to any political party of their choice.

“Every Nigerian has the right to reside in any part of the federation, and no government or public official may discriminate against a citizen on the basis of their political opinion,” ADC stated.

The party noted that Mr. Shekwolo swore an oath to that Constitution, adding that in one sentence, he violated three of its provisions.

ADC said Mr. Shekwolo’s threat is not an isolated threat, and recalled that an APC Senator, Francis Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East, on August 15, 2026, during the Osun governorship election, allegedly instructed APC supporters to dealt with “Anyone who votes for the person they are not supposed to vote for.”

The party said the Senator had earlier made similar threat against Accord Party members, but regretted that he was only questioned by the police and allowed to go.

“No charge. No suspension. No consequence. Ten days later, a council chairman in the Federal Capital Territory, under the President’s own nose, tells residents to vote APC or get out.

“That is not a coincidence, that is a lesson being learned. When a Senator can threaten to kill voters and keep his seat, a council chairman will conclude, quite reasonably, that he can threaten to evict them without consequences,” ADC stated.

The party alleged that they learnt the threat from President Bola Tinubu, who the ADC noted that on July 29, 2026, during a meeting with Catholic Bishops in Abuja, declared that “All is fair in politics.”

According to the ADC, the president’s declaration should not be a licence for intimidation, voter suppression, threats of violence or forced displacement.

The party said Tinubu should call his party members officials to order, and said the National Peace Committee, “to speak, publicly and without ambiguity.”

ADC called on the APC to publicly disown Mr. Shekwolo’s statement and discipline him under its own constitution, and said Mr. Shekwolo should retract his threat and publicly apologise to the people of Kuje.

The party also called on domestic and international election observers to place the Abuja and Osun on record as early-warning locations ahead of 2027.

“Nigerians are not tenants in their own country, holding their residency at the pleasure of a ruling party. We are citizens,” ADC said, and promised to defend “in every ward, in every council and in every court in this federation.”
